1,001 nonsmoking rooms | 2013

site-specific video, 4 min.

Individuals walk silently along hotel corridors, slipping into their rooms; they are alone, but the quantity and proximity of their neighbors creates an illusion of intimacy. Siegfried Kracauer describes the hotel lobby as an exemplary modern space, a comparison that can still be applied to contemporary cityscapes. 1,001 Nonsmoking Guest Rooms conflates texts from hotel adverts and boiler plate romance alongside images of endless corridors taken from the hotels architectural blueprints. The result is a humorous look at the promise of the hotel as a place of desire and dreams.
