The Last Bolsheviks | 2007
marker on velum, 12 drawings, 8x10 in.each
A series of portraits drawn from a photograph found in the New York Times.
New York Times photograph
The photograph depicts a crowd, in favor of re-installing bloshevik rule in Russia. The historical obliteration of the individual in favor of the masses in bolshevism materializes when breaking up the image into singular portraits. Abstracted by the half-tone printing process, the individual becomes once again obliterated. Through the meticulous drawing process this series attempts to reinstate a textual identity to the crowd.
